As a parent, I embraced the idea of encouraging multilingualism within my household.

I wanted to provide my twin boys with the opportunity to learn multiple languages from an early age.

My husband and I come from different linguistic backgrounds, with me speaking French and him speaking Swiss German. Additionally, having met and lived in London, English became a shared language between us.

With this unique linguistic environment at home, my husband and I made a conscious effort to consistently communicate with our boys in our respective languages. I would speak to them in French, while my husband would use Swiss German.

Surprisingly, our children also started spontaneously picking up English without any formal teaching. Perhaps it was due to hearing us converse in English or from exposure to media and their surroundings. In any case, this unintentional acquisition of English became an unexpected advantage in their multilingual journey.

By exposing our children to different languages at home, we hoped to nurture their linguistic abilities and broaden their cultural understanding. This emphasis on multilingualism creates an enriching environment where our boys can effortlessly switch between languages and develop a deep appreciation for diverse cultures.

Overall, our experience has shown that fostering a multilingual environment at home can be a rewarding journey that not only benefits our children linguistically but also opens doors to different opportunities and worldviews.
